Tire Testing

Vehicle tires have to undergo stringent testing before they are even placed on a vehicle or sold to repair shops. Before the rubber meets the road, these tires are put through a series of strict inspections which determine whether they can even be tested on a vehicle. These tests incorporate every aspect of the tire, from it’s shape to its size to its weight and balance.

One of the first tests a tire is put through is the tire geometry measurement test. The sidewalls of the tire are closely examined to ensure that no bulges or depressions are compromising the quality of the tire. The roundness, or “runout,” of the tire is also closely inspected by trained professionals. This test determines whether any radial or lateral flaws will cause problems as the tire rotates while in use.

Tire balance is also extremely important for tire quality and comfort on the road.  Dynamic balance systems are used to check the many different types of balance tests a tire must pass in order to be used on a vehicle. Static balance is caused by heavy or light areas on the tire, while couple imbalance happens when the two sides of the tire have different masses. Upper and lower plane imbalances are the amount of weight needed to correct static and couple imbalance. Dynamic balance incorporates all these different factors, ensuring that the tire is fit for use on the road.

Tire quality is of the utmost importance when it comes to a reliable tire. These tires are usually the only thing connecting a car or vehicle to the road, and therefore they must be extremely reliable in order to provide a smooth, efficient driving experience. Specialized manufacturers have developed advanced technology for inspecting and measuring tires. These instruments are used, in addition to human expertise, throughout the inspection process.
