Tire Uniformity

When tires are manufactured, one of the most important features is their uniformity. The fact that a set of tires contains exact replicas of one another is what guarantees a reliable ride in any vehicle. In order for manufacturers to ensure tire uniformity among their products, high-tech equipment and inspection instruments are utilized. These tools are the key to retaining tire uniformity throughout a product line.

There are several areas which are measured by tire uniformity inspection equipment. Force variation is one of the key areas which affect tire performance. Force variations can cause disturbances as a tire rotates, including vibration and steering pull. In order to avoid force variation, every tire is checked for shape, size and flaws. Special instruments carefully measure every square inch of the tire to make sure even the smallest defect is revealed.

Sidewalls may also be problematic when it comes to tire uniformity. The materials used must be of the highest and most durable quality. The body-ply splice on a sidewall must be accurate; any overlaps or improper construction can lead to a depression or bulge in the sidewall. These flaws will often appear once the tire is inflated, so trained professionals are required to inspect each tire carefully after inflation.

Tire uniformity is often affected by runout. Runout is the degree to which a tire is no longer perfectly round. The more runout, the more potential problems a tire may have. Runout can occur radially or laterally, and the higher the degree of runout the worse the driving disturbances will be. Tires with a great amount of runout are often discarded due to their unsafe nature.

Tire sets which are uniform tend to last longer and have fewer problems on the road. Manufacturers take tire uniformity very seriously. It affects more than just driving experience and cost-efficiency; it also can have a direct effect upon the security of the driver and passengers in a vehicle.
